This short story is about the events that shape the soul of the main character, depicting the coming of age of a boy named Vasya. Vasya has a complicated situation at home: his mother has died, and his father pays him no attention, only to his little daughter, because she resembles her mother. The son grows up "like a wild sapling in a field." The town where Vasya lives is surrounded by ponds. On one of them, there is an island with an old castle, where beggars and vagrants live. After meeting the poor children Valik and Marusya, the main character, the judge's son, feels sympathy for them. Communicating with these children becomes a true school of life for Vasya. It is in the "bad company" that Vasya receives his first lessons in kindness and humanism.
