On February 12, 1840, a censored permit was issued to print "Kobzar." This was the name given to his first collection of poems, which consisted of eight works, by the 26-year-old poet. (This title was preserved for the next two editions, in 1844 and 1860). "Kobzar" was published somewhere around March — early April and received unanimous recognition from critics regarding the poetic talent of its author. Since then, all of Shevchenko's poetic works have been identified with the texts of the book titled "Kobzar." It opened a new era in the history of Ukrainian literature. No Ukrainian poet before this had produced such wonderful works as those that made up "Kobzar," nor had anyone stirred such thoughts or feelings. The melodic poetic word, closeness to folklore, passionate love for the Motherland, and pure folk language — the main features of Shevchenko's language — were vividly manifested in this book. Shevchenko appeals to the national memory of Ukrainians, reminds them of the past glory of Zaporizhzhia, sings of the oppressed peasantry, and dreams of the people becoming the rightful masters of their land.
