The study of the lexical composition of each language is not only interesting for specialists and the general public but also important for society, as it indicates the ability of the language to create new forms, reveals its potential and significance for the people. The author brings back from oblivion another part of our linguistic wealth by describing the lexicon of the Western Ukrainian variant of the literary language during the interwar period, which developed at that time in Galicia and, in particular, in its center – the city of Lviv. This dialect was vibrant, full-fledged, and multifunctional. The book highlights the social dialects that functioned in Lviv during the interwar period, including the jargons of schoolchildren and athletes. Special attention is given to the "balaka," which became a linguistic feature of the subculture of the "batyars," which flourished the most in the 1920s and 1930s. It also illustrates the specifics of Soviet policy in the linguistic sphere, which aimed to limit the use of Western Ukrainian lexicon in order to artificially bring the Ukrainian language closer to Russian. It shows how contemporary writers, striving to eliminate the consequences of the policy of Russification, actualize Western Ukrainian lexicon, enriching the lexical composition of the national language.
