As it turned out, the seriously ill woman was a former KGB colonel and had met Stus many times, especially in the last days of his life. The novel vividly depicts the life of the poet in his native Donetsk region, surrounded by friends, educators, and writers, and in the concentration camp — where prisoners of conscience were held, being blamed for their beliefs.
