The mother of one of the descendants of the famous Roksolana was another Ukrainian from Podillia – Nadiia, who in the harem of Sultan Ibrahim the Mad received the name Khadija Turhan. She lived during the turbulent years of the mid-17th century, filled with uprisings in the provinces of the Ottoman Empire, the revolts of janissaries and merchants in Constantinople, bloody reprisals, executions, and the overthrow of her husband, the sultan. Khadija Turhan faced many trials and difficulties. But as the wife of the ruler, and later the regent of the underage Sultan Mehmed IV, she steadfastly overcame them.
During the reign of Khadija's son, the Ukrainian Cossacks led by Bohdan Khmelnytsky and Petro Doroshenko, in the struggle for a united free Ukraine, received Ottoman protection and acted jointly with the Janissaries and the Crimean Tatar army against Polish and Muscovite oppression.
Unfortunately, the figure of this Ukrainian sultana, unlike Roksolana, is little known in Ukraine.
Candidate of Art Studies, journalist, author of the popular science book "Roksolana: Myths and Realities" (2015, 2nd edition 2016) Oleksandra Shutko, based on historical facts, archival materials, and research by Turkish, American, and Western European scholars, wrote a novel about Hatice Turhan, in which not only the events and characters are real, but even their dialogues that have reached our times thanks to Ottoman chroniclers.
